Random Thoughts Thursday

I feel like all my thoughts lately are about either school or Girl Scouts.  Which makes things not so random, but oh well.

The beauty of an organization like Girl Scouts is that all girls are welcome, no matter their race, color, religion, creed, orientation, shoe size, or order preference at Starbucks.  More than anything else in the world, I want my daughters to be a part of something that promotes the values that really and truly matter in life: honesty, service, consideration, responsibility, respect, conservation, and sisterhood.  They don't need an outside organization to promote their faith; that's our job, and it's why we take them to church.  Learning to respect other people, whether or not all their beliefs line up with ours, is more valuable to me than spending all our time with people who are exactly the same as us.  I can teach my kids what I believe is good and true, and then they can let their lights shine wherever they go.

Whoa.  Maybe I just need to write a post about why I believe Girl Scouts is a good organization.  Or a letter to Rep. Morris of Indiana.

The number of cookie boxes in my house is slowly declining.  Three more weekends to go!

Unless, of course, someone wants to buy a whole bunch of cases of cookies all at once.  Then we can be done and I can have some of my life back.

I'm pretty sure I got an A on the test I took today.  Which makes me really happy because I left the house determined to be happy with a C.  Of course, I may be in total shock once my instructor grades it, but for now I'm going to hold on to the feeling of doing well.  It's all I have.

My house is a complete disaster.  I swear there are goblins messing it up while we sleep.

Why is it that there seems to be less time in a day with each passing year?

If I have a chance, I really want to do a blog post titled "Pictures I didn't take".  I have a LOT of those.

I really love being a part of our school's parent group.  I like being active in the community and working with people I like and respect to ensure that the school remains a great place for kids to learn.

The little 18-month-old boy I babysit can now say my name!  And it's slightly pathetic how excited something like that makes me.

Valentine's candy is of the devil.

School politics make my head hurt.

Actually, politics of any kind make my head hurt.  Can't we all just get along?

I spent all night last night thinking and dreaming about DNA, RNA, transcription, translation, ribosomes, and amino acids.  I need more sleep.

And also a life.

People must not blog about DNA replication very often, because Blogger's spell check doesn't recognize "ribosomes".

Will people think less of me if I admit that I actually kind of like Kraft mac & cheese?  Just wondering...

I'm already tired of Girl Scout Cookie sales and there are still four weekends to go.  Good times.

I have only eaten one Thin Mint so far.  How many Tagalongs I've eaten is irrelevant.

*UPDATE*: the video I linked to below has been removed and KATU will no longer be running the ads.  Thanks to everyone who contacted KATU on behalf of people living with mental illness!

I seem to have a problem lately remembering that it's Thursday.  I'm not sure anyone reads here anymore anyway, so maybe it won't matter if one day I just stop doing Random Thoughts Thursday.

I sat and re-watched a whole bunch of lectures this morning and then took a test.  Wow.  I'll have to remember that little trick.

I'm not doing quite as well this quarter as I did last quarter, but I still barely have an A in both my classes, so I'm okay with that.

This ad made me furious.  I would love it if everyone who reads reads here would either call KATU at (503) 231-4264 or email them at thedesk@katu.com and tell them to stop demonizing people living with mental illness.

Ellie is suddenly obsessed with headbands.  I guess they stay in better with the new haircut or something, but she threw a fit this morning when I tried to fix her hair differently.  Then she got distracted by whacking her elbow against the shelf while throwing said fit, and ended up going to school without the headband.  I have a feeling I'll hear all about it when I pick her up, though.

Everyone is trying to get me to watch Downton Abbey.  Why does that make me want to watch it even less?

I just realized that it's almost 2:00 and I haven't had lunch yet.  I should probably eat something.

Purging the house of chocolate so I wouldn't eat it all was a good idea.  Purging the house of chocolate by eating it all...not so much.

Friendly and Helpful

One part of the Girl Scout Law states that Girl Scouts are friendly and helpful.  We discussed it at Ellie's troop meeting two weeks ago.  As a parent and a Girl Scout leader, it's nice when I get to see something like that being taken to heart.

See, it's long been a source of pride for Ellie to know that she has the longest hair in the family.  Lexi once held that title, but she had to relinquish it after suffering a self-inflicted mullet.  Ellie has loved her long hair and has been the most willing of all my girls to let me play with it, so I've loved it, too.

Then, about a month ago I was shampooing her and she said to me, completely out of the blue, "Mom, I want to get my hair cut and give it to that place that makes wigs for kids who don't have hair."

And I was blown away.

I don't know where she heard about Locks of Love, but I'm glad she did.  On Saturday we went to see my friend Erica and, after wavering a little bit, Ellie decided to go ahead and give the long hair title back to her sister.

(Thank you, Vicki, for the cell phone picture! Mine didn't turn out.)

After!

She's so excited to mail her ponytail to Locks of Love so another little girl can have beautiful hair.  I'm so proud of my girl!

Random Thoughts Thursday

I discovered this week that it's not as hard to make Spaghetti alla Carbonara as I've always thought.  And my entire family is rejoicing.  Very rarely do we give a recipe 5 stars, but this one earned it.

It would be really nice if people read emails the entire way through before responding to them.

Rice Chex are an addictive snack.  This is good, because no one else in my house eats Rice Chex, and yet I have two boxes.

Is Rice Chex singular or plural?  Should I have said, "Rice Chex is an addictive snack" up there?  This will bother me all day.

I haven't missed a day yet!

We cancelled our newspaper subscription about a year ago.  Periodically they call us and offer a greatly discounted price if we'll just start subscribing again.  We always decline.  About two weeks ago, the paper mysteriously started showing up on our doorstep again.  We aren't paying for it, didn't request it, and yet there it is.  Very strange.

I'm wearing my awesome Shakespeare t-shirt today because my Book Club meets tonight, and this month we read "Much Ado About Nothing".

I hope people don't judge me by the contents of Ellie's lunchbox.  That girl is hard to please.
