Woes of an Almost-Middle-Schooler's Mother

Vicki will be starting middle school in ohmyword five short months.

I'm not ready for this.

She is, though.  Ready and bouncing up and down with excitement.  The girl who has never cared about clothes in her life is planning her wardrobe for the time when she no longer has to wear a uniform (darn it.)

Last week, all the 5th graders at her school got to go over to the middle school for a tour.  And I wanted desperately to go along, but I managed to convince myself that it would be better for all of us if I just stayed home.  Moving into the world of middle-schoolers is not something that needs to be done with Mom holding your hand.  And, quite possibly, sobbing uncontrollably.  Yes, better for everyone.

That evening at dinner she gave us all the scoop.  The middle school is BIG, but awesome.  Lockers are so cool.  If you don't play in the band as a 6th grader, you can't do it as a 7th or 8th grader, so please, please, please can she get a flute?  She learned an exciting new word: electives.  And she threw it around like she'd been saying it forever.  She was suddenly a world ahead of her former lowly elementary-school self.

I miss my baby.

Heaven help us all when she actually starts middle school in the fall.
Oh, and the school supply she's convinced she needs more than anything else?

A cell phone.

Of course.

Can't I just freeze time right now?  Please?

I'm not ready for this.  Not one little bit.

    You'll do just fine, Mama!

Because of the move to Virginia, Andrew will be starting middle school, too. If you don't want Vicki to start quite yet, just move back to Utah. ;)

  2. Yikes! I do not envy you. I am so scared of that day. You will do just fine, though, I just know it.

  3. PLEASE PLEASE get her a flute!! I wish I was there to give her private lessons. :D And I highly suggest starting in 6th grade and not waiting until 7th or 8th grade.

I am excited (EXCITED) for the middle school years. Aiden is only in 3rd grade, so I have a while. But I LOVED teaching middle school and I love talking to middle schoolers and... I don't know. It's like the beginning of everything. Middle school is IT.

Stay away from the cell phone at all costs, though (my opinion, of course). Good luck with that. :)

Wish I lived there so we could talk in person.

  4. Your comment about having mom hold your hand while you start middle school reminded me of a guy I dated. He was at BYU and his mom still went with him to all his appointments with the career counselor and helped him with all his class scheduling.

She was in the same profession that he wanted to go into but I still saw apron strings and an over involved mama.

I'm interested as to why Sariah is opposed to cell phones for middle schoolers. Being a LONG way from this issue myself it is one I haven't thought a lot about.

  5. If you're seriously considering the flute, talk to Rebecca. She is an expert.
